Passport Visa

Entry Requirements: Foreigners seeking to enter the United Republic of Tanzania should be in possession of a valid passport. The passport is to be presented to the Immigration Control Officer at any entry point, border station, airport, harbour. The passport must be presented along with one of the following:

  • A valid visa

  • A resident permit

  • A pass

N.B.: A visitor must also present an onward or return ticket together with proof that the visitor has sufficient funds to support himself or herself while in Tanzania.

 

Clothing

On safari or walking tours: comfortable, hardwearing footwear and light clothing for day time, bring some warm cover-up layers for the night, and a rainproof jacket or coat. A sun hat is also recommended.

 

Currency Exchange Tanzanian Shillings (Tshs)

Money may be changed at commercial banks or at bureau-de-change. Visa cardholders can have access to local currency 24 hours a day through (ATM). Master card is also accepted at ATMs . These service can be found in the bigger cities. Other credit cards have limited acceptance.

 

The Tanzanian Shillings have the following denominations:

  • Coins of TShs: 50, 100 & 200

  • Notes of TShs: 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 & 10000

 

Climate

The climate is warm and humid in the coastal regions but regulated by sea breezes. temperatures range from 24-28 degree centigrade. October to mid-March is the hottest period and June to September, the coolest. However, the range of temperature is always limited: between 25 and 30 degrees centigrade on the coast and between 22 and 27 degrees temperature in the highlands. The rainy season is from mid-March to the end of June

 

Traveling by air

Tanzania has three International Airports: Mwalimu Julius Nyerere International Airport, Kilimanjaro International Airport and Zanzibar International airport. Major airlines provide direct International flights to Dar es Salaam & Kilimanjaro where connections to other cities are widely available with local airlines , local air charters, train or by road and sea. Several air travel companies operates small fleets of turbo-prop aircrafts and fly daily to Game Parks as well as to Zanzibar, Mafia, Mwanza and Kigoma.

 

Traveling by sea

Ferries operate regularly between Zanzibar and main East African ports; these crafts range from sailing dhows to tourist-class twin-hull fast boats. Booking can be made easily at the ports in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, and through most travel agent.

 

Traveling by train

There are passenger train services on Tanzania -Zambia Railway (Tazara) from Dar es Salaam to Zambia, along the central line Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) linking Dar es Salaam with Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika and on the rail link to Mwanza on Lake Victoria.

 

Health

Visitors from countries infected with Yellow Fever must produce international certificates of vaccination, this is particularly relevant for those travelling from neighboring African countries.

 

Vaccination

If visiting Zanzibar from mainland Tanzania, a yellow fever certificate must be produced.

The British Department of Health recommends vaccination against Hepatitis A, Polio and Typhoid.

 

Malaria

It is essential for visitors to take a course of anti-malarial tablets, commencing two weeks before travel.

 

Language

English is widely spoken but a few words in Swahili will always be appreciated. Here are a few good words for you to use during the trip in Tanzania:

 

Hello! – Jambo

How are you? - Habari?

Good morning - Habari za asubuhi

Good evening - Habari za jioni

Yes – Ndiyo

No – Hapana

Thank you very much - Asante sana

Good-bye - Kwaheri

 

Shopping

The tourist areas and hotels sell a wide range of souvenirs, jewellery and trinkets. Don't be afraid to bargain at roadside curio stalls.

Security

Tanzania is generally a safe country but don't invite temptations. Keep an eye on your belongings. Don't walk in the towns or cities at night - take a taxi. Don't carry cameras or large amount of cash; beware of pickpockets. Use hotel safety deposit boxes to safeguard valuables and always obtain a receipt. Best of all, leave jewellery at home.
